Use this walkthrough to enter an ad-hoc meeting from an activity or a direct-message conversation, confirm that you are connected, and leave without confusing the meeting stage with the call itself. The entry point changes with the conversation, but the rest of the meeting experience is shared. Follow the preparation first, take the activity or direct-message branch, then continue with the common checkpoints.

Join the right room, check your media, and leave when you are finished. Activity meetings and direct-message calls share the same stage, with different entry points and audiences.

Sign in with the account that belongs to the space or conversation. A private activity also requires private-area access. You can be connected to only one meeting at a time.

Enter An Activity Meeting

•
Open the activity - Check the space and activity name before starting a call. Look beneath it for a Voice entry with an existing room.
•
Start or join - Select Voice to join an active meeting. If none exists, choose Start Meeting from the activity menu or Start meeting beside its message composer. Draft or archived activities do not offer the normal start flow.
•
Wait for the stage - The meeting opens in the owning activity's chat context. Your participant presence appears beneath the activity after joining.

The first person starts the room; later people join it. You do not need to create a separate room or send invitations merely because more people are coming.

Enter A Direct-Message Call

•
Select the conversation in Messages - Confirm its title or participants. The call belongs to this conversation, not to a related space.
•
Start a call - If no room exists, use Start meeting beside the message composer.
•
Join or reopen - An active room has a Voice entry and a top-bar meeting action. Use Join meeting to connect or Open meeting to return to a room already selected.

Confirm The Connection And Media

A fresh room starts with your microphone and camera off. Turn on only what you intend to send.

•
Check your presence - Your entry should appear under the correct activity or conversation, and the stage should show the room's feeds.
•
Check the call bar - Locate microphone, camera, screen sharing, and the red Leave meeting control. Allow the microphone or camera when your browser or device asks, if you want to use it.
•
Choose equipment if needed - Use the audio or camera selector to choose a headset, speaker output, or another camera. Verify the resulting control state before speaking.
•
Check connection health - Give a checking connection time to settle. If the call is reconnecting, wait for recovery rather than assuming that opening the stage alone means others can hear you.

The stage, call controls, and participant presence together confirm that the room join completed.

You are ready when your presence is in the intended room and the call controls respond. See Media and call controls if equipment or permissions need attention.

Keep Working Or Switch Rooms

Close the stage when you want to read, edit, or navigate while staying connected. Picture-in-picture keeps the call nearby after you have viewed the stage. Selecting Voice again or opening the preview returns to the same call.

Starting or joining another room replaces your current meeting. An activity-room switch connects the replacement before leaving the old room; a failed join leaves the current call available. A direct-message switch leaves first. If that new connection fails, explicitly rejoin whichever room you need.

Leave The Meeting

•
Choose Leave meeting - Use the red call-end control in the stage or expanded picture-in-picture. Closing the stage alone does not disconnect you.
•
Check that you left - Your preview closes and your presence disappears after the room updates. Other people may remain in the call.
•
Handle optional feedback - Send a rating, add details, or dismiss the call-quality prompt. You have already left regardless of that choice.

If You Cannot Join

A missing start action often means a room already exists. Look for Voice first, then check that the activity is active and your account has access. A meeting invitation does not bypass a private area's or conversation's audience.

A warning beside Voice means the latest refresh or join attempt failed. Check your connection and retry. If recovery closes a call, return to its activity or conversation after connectivity is restored and join again.

See Meeting rooms and presence for room visibility, or Keep working during a meeting for the picture-in-picture workflow.
