Use this walkthrough to add a batch of files or an existing folder tree to Documents, follow every result, and confirm that the new material arrived in the right part of the space. The destination matters as much as the files: everything you upload inherits the audience of the space, subspace, or activity that contains it.

Use this walkthrough to add a batch of files or an existing folder tree to Documents, follow every result, and confirm that the new material arrived in the right part of the space. The destination matters as much as the files: everything you upload inherits the audience of the space, subspace, or activity that contains it.

Prepare The Upload

Sign in to Visual Space - Direct uploads are available to signed-in members in Documents.
Choose an active area - You can upload to a space, subspace, activity, or folder where you can contribute. An archived activity is read-only, so its New control and upload actions are unavailable even inside nested folders.
Check the intended audience - Folders do not have separate privacy settings. A file uploaded below a private activity stays within that activity's audience, while a file uploaded in a public area follows that area's access. If the audience is wrong, choose a different space area before starting.
Review the file formats - Everyday document, media, text, table, and archive formats are generally accepted. Executables, scripts, active browser content, and similar unsafe formats are blocked. Export blocked material to a safe format instead of merely changing its extension.
Check unusually large files - The current starting limits are 10 MB per image or ordinary media file, 20 MB per video, and 500 MB per generic file. These are starting points: subscriptions, space ownership, and assigned file-size boosts can change the effective ceiling. A failure message shows the live limit that applies to that file and uploader.

Per-file size and remaining space storage are separate checks. A space starts with up to 5 GB of dedicated storage before more is needed. Every private file counts toward it, while a public file counts when it is larger than 10 MB. A file may therefore fit its type limit but still exceed the space's remaining capacity. See Uploads And Storage for the full policy.

Choose The Destination First

Open Documents - Enter the space where the files belong, then open Documents. Start with Documents if you need an introduction to the module.
Select the owning area - Choose the space, subspace, or activity whose audience should receive the upload. On desktop, the side panel helps you move between these areas; on mobile, use the Documents header and folder cards.
Open the exact folder - Follow the folder tree or folder cards until the intended destination is the current view. The header identifies the area or folder you are browsing, and the grid shows its direct contents.
Pause for an access check - Confirm that this location already has the right audience. Adding another nested folder will improve organization, but it will not narrow or broaden access.

Documents uses the location that is open when the upload starts. If you need to prepare a destination folder first, follow Organize Documents And Folders, then return to that folder before selecting any files.

Upload Several Files Together

Use File upload when the files should all land directly in the current location and you do not need to recreate folders from your device.

Open the upload picker - Select New, then File upload.
Select the batch - Choose one or several files in the device picker and confirm the selection. Each selected file is added to the upload tray separately.
Cancel without changes when needed - Closing or canceling the picker creates no files and leaves the Documents location unchanged. Reopen File upload when you are ready.
Keep Documents open - The upload tray is shown while you are in Documents. You can continue looking through the current library, but remain in Documents when you want to watch the batch.

The selected files all use the area and folder that were current when you began the upload. They do not acquire separate access settings from one another.

Both upload choices use the Documents location that is already open when the picker starts.

Upload A Folder Tree

Use Folder upload on the web when your device already has a useful set of folders that you want to preserve.

Open the receiving location - Return to the space area or folder that should contain the selected folder. The selected folder becomes a child of this location.
Start the folder picker - Select New, then Folder upload.
Choose one folder - Confirm the folder in the browser picker. Documents reads its files and relative paths, creates the selected root folder and missing nested folders, then places each file under its matching parent.
Leave the hierarchy intact while it starts - Let Documents establish the folder branches and begin their files. Large trees can show several files in progress at once, and deeper branches may appear as their paths are prepared.
Cancel safely if the folder is wrong - Canceling the folder picker leaves the library unchanged. Reopen it after returning to the correct destination.

A folder upload preserves the nested structure represented by its files. Empty device folders may not appear because there is no selected file path requiring Documents to create them. After the upload, inspect the tree rather than assuming every empty local container was copied.

Follow Each Result

The tray tracks files individually, so one rejected item does not turn an otherwise successful selection into an all-or-nothing batch.

Watch active transfers - A progress indicator advances while a file is being sent.
Allow processing to finish - After the file data arrives, the indicator may become indeterminate for a short processing stage. Do not treat that change as a failure.
Look for success - A green check confirms that the individual file completed. The new file can then appear in the destination's grid.
Open failure details - A red error marks a failed item. Expand the tray to read its title, explanation, applicable size or capacity details, and any available action.
Collapse without losing the batch - Use the tray toggle when you need more room. Collapsing keeps its tracked items and their states available.
Close only after review - Closing the tray clears the tracked list. Wait until you have noted every failure and checked the successful files before dismissing it.

If the tray contains successes and failures, keep the successes. Correct and retry only the failed files; selecting the entire batch again can create unnecessary duplicates.

Recover From A Failed Item

Reduce an oversized file - Compress it, shorten a video, lower its export quality, or choose another safe representation. If Increase limit is offered and appropriate for the space, use it to review the available file-size option before retrying.
Resolve insufficient storage - A Not enough storage message can compare the file with the space's available capacity. Free capacity where appropriate or use Add storage when that option is available, then retry the affected file.
Export a blocked type - Save active or executable content as a supported, non-executable format such as PDF or an ordinary image when that preserves the material you need.
Select unreadable local data again - Failed to load file data means the browser or device could not read that selection. Reopen the picker and select the original file again.
Retry a general failure - Wait a moment and upload the individual file again. Completed files and successfully created folder branches do not need to be repeated.

A missing card preview is not an upload failure. Accepted files can use a filename-and-extension card when Documents cannot create a visual preview. Files And Previews explains which files open in the browser and when to use Download.

Verify The Destination And Structure

Wait for final states - Review the tray until every file you care about has either a success check or a clear failure.
Confirm the current context - Check the Documents header and selected area or folder before reviewing the grid. This confirms which inherited audience owns the uploaded material.
Match the successful file cards - Compare the filenames in the grid with the successful entries in the tray. A generic extension card still counts as a completed upload.
Open the uploaded root folder - For a folder upload, find the selected folder beneath the receiving location and open it.
Follow each nested branch - Expand the desktop folder tree or open folder cards in sequence. Confirm that files appear under the same parent folders they used on your device.
Account for partial success - If one file failed, check whether its sibling files and folders are already present before retrying. Upload only the missing item into its intended folder.
Correct any placement issue - Use Organize Documents And Folders to create a missing folder or move established material into place when your access allows it.

The upload is complete when the successful files appear in the intended Documents context, the required nested folders are present, and every remaining tray error has a deliberate retry or replacement plan. For a deeper explanation of location and inherited access, continue with Library And Folders.

Common Problems

Why is the New control disabled?

The current activity may be archived. Archived activities and every Documents folder below them are read-only. Move to an active space area where you can contribute.

Why did only part of my selection arrive?

Each file is checked and uploaded independently. A size, type, storage, data-reading, or temporary upload problem can reject one item while its siblings succeed. Use the tray to identify and retry only the failed item.

Why is the effective limit different from the starting limit?

The live ceiling can reflect the file category, the current space, the uploader, subscriptions, and assigned file-size boosts. Trust the limit shown in the failure message for that upload.

Why did the folder upload create folders but miss a file?

Folder creation and file results can succeed independently. Open the relevant branch, compare it with the tray, correct the failed file's specific problem, and upload that file directly into its intended folder.

Did uploading into a nested folder make the files private?

Not by itself. Nested folders inherit access from their owning space, subspace, or activity. The destination area, not the folder depth, determines the audience.

Why does a successful file have no visual preview?

Preview creation is best effort. The original can complete successfully and appear as a named extension card even when no preview is available.
