Scope answers where Search should look. Access determines which of those matches your account may read. Keeping those two ideas separate makes it much easier to understand a missing result.
Recognize The Active Scope
Open Search inside a space to look within that community. Its avatar and name appear in the query field, and the prompt names the space. On smaller screens, the bubble keeps the avatar and clear control while omitting the longer label.
Select the space bubble's clear control to broaden the current query globally. This removes the space from the Search route and removes the bubble. The separate clear control at the end of the input clears your words instead.
Global Search can look across public content, joined spaces, and accessible conversations. To narrow back to one community, open that space and launch Search again.
Global Search can discover a public space outside your joined-space navigation.
What Changes When You Widen A Search
The same phrase can produce a different set of matches after clearing the scope:
A local search hides Spaces and excludes direct messages. It keeps the remaining content within the selected space; it is not a way to search every conversation with that space's members.
Access Still Applies
Clearing the scope does not grant access. Private space content depends on membership and permission to read its area. Shared messages depend on access to their topic or area, and direct-message results require current participation in the conversation. Community restrictions that prevent reading also affect Search.
Goals are discovered within joined spaces. Published events have broader discovery, so an event can appear even if you have not joined its community. A public space result is an invitation to explore; opening it does not automatically join you.
The full destination checks access when you open it. If the item has moved, been removed, or become unavailable to your account, a previous search result cannot restore it.
When Something Familiar Is Missing
Start with the settings you can control. A common word may need a more distinctive companion; a long phrase may need shortening. Try All and All time, then consider whether the space bubble is keeping the search too narrow.
For private articles and documents, a focused global category may omit matches that appear in All or in the owning space's search. Try those views before assuming the item is gone. If you already know its folder, board, or conversation, opening that location directly is often the fastest check.
New or changed content may take a little time to become discoverable. Submit the query again after a moment. Search is not a live inventory of every item you can open.
Common Questions
Why does another person see different results for the same words?
Your memberships, private-area access, and conversations may differ. Scope and filters may also differ, even when the visible query is the same.
Can I search a direct message inside a space?
No. Clear the space scope and choose Messages in global Search. Only conversations you can currently access are eligible.
Does the result count reveal hidden matches?
No. Access-sensitive counts describe the matches available to you, rather than the number of private items you cannot read.
Will returning from a result keep my search?
Returning to the same scope and category keeps the current query and loaded results in the app session. Opening Search in a different space can start a fresh search; refreshing the app can clear the temporary session.
