Search within a space when you know which community owns the work but cannot remember its exact location. This guide keeps the search local, then widens the same query when another community may hold the answer.
Establish The Local Boundary
•Open the community - Navigate to the space that owns the work, then open Search from within it.
•Check the query field - Confirm the space avatar and name in the scope bubble. On a phone, use the avatar and the space-specific input prompt to recognize the same boundary.
•Type a useful phrase - Enter a few distinctive words. Search updates when you pause, or you can press Enter to submit immediately.
•Read the first matches - Confirm their space or owner context before opening one. Spaces should not appear as a category because you are already inside a particular community.
Narrow The Results
•Choose All when uncertain - A project name might belong to an article, goal, event, document, or message. All keeps those possibilities together.
•Select one category when you have a clue - Use the category dropdown to focus on Docs, Messages, or another available family. Selecting a new category replaces the previous choice.
•Adjust time carefully - Start with All time. Choose a shorter period only if you are confident the item was created or changed recently.
•Open a likely match - Check the full item, then return to the same search to continue comparing results with your query and loaded pages retained.
A local search does not expose every private area in the community. It uses your current access, and its Messages results cover shared conversations rather than direct messages.
Look Beyond This Community
•Clear the space bubble - Select the clear control attached to the avatar and space name. Leave the separate query-clear control alone so your words remain in place.
•Verify the change - The bubble disappears as Search moves to its global page. Your query and active filters now apply beyond the original space.
•Compare the new context - Results can come from other communities. Spaces becomes available in the category menu, and global Messages can include your direct conversations.
Global broadens discovery without changing membership or access. If you need to search the original community again, return to that space and open Search there; this can begin a fresh local search.
Troubleshooting The Boundary
Spaces is still in the menu. You are searching globally. Open the intended space and launch Search from there again.
A direct message is missing. Direct conversations have no space scope. Clear the bubble and choose Messages globally.
A known item is absent. Try All and All time, then a shorter phrase. If you can open its area or folder directly, check there too; recently changed content may not appear immediately.
Another member sees more. Their private-area access or conversations may differ from yours. Search does not change those permissions.
