Joining a space does two things at once: it makes your signed-in account a member of that community, and it adds the space to your personal navigation. That joined state follows you across Visual Space, so communities you return to often remain easy to reach.
What Membership Changes
When you join a public space or accept a valid invitation, Visual Space recognizes your account as a member. Joining does not create a separate space-specific identity; member surfaces use the profile identity connected to your account.
The change appears in several useful places:
Membership is more than a bookmark, but it is not an authority grant. It records your relationship with the community and gives you a persistent way back to it.
The Joined indicator confirms the account's membership while the public Space identity remains unchanged.
Four States That Stay Separate
Space access is easier to understand when you keep four related ideas apart:
This separation lets a community welcome ordinary members without giving them administrative power, while still limiting sensitive areas to the people who need them. Space Privacy explains how private-area entry works.
Join Public Spaces Or Respond To Invitations
To join a public space, sign in, find the published space, review its identity and About information, then use its Join action. The joined state and rail avatar confirm that the space is now part of your regular workspace. For the complete discovery and return journey, follow Find, Join, and Reopen Spaces.
Private spaces are not joined through ordinary public discovery. When someone invites you, the profile area can show a pending-invitations count and open Your invitations. Each invitation identifies the sender and target space so you can make a deliberate choice:
Accepting an invitation does not automatically grant a role. If the invitation brings you into a private root space, it establishes the private access and joined navigation needed to enter; later roles remain a separate decision.
Your Joined-Spaces Rail
Joined spaces appear as avatar buttons in the spaces and shortcuts rail. The current space has an active indicator, and you can drag avatars into an order that matches how you work. That order belongs to you; rearranging it does not change another member's rail or the shared organization inside the space.
The rail also carries lightweight context before you open a space:
Opening a joined space uses a helpful return point rather than promising to restore one fragile detail page. Visual Space can return to a recent valid space area while keeping the app you are currently using where possible. If the remembered destination is no longer suitable, the space opens at a safe normal entry point. Selecting the already active space returns to the space-level view of the current app.
The rail answers “which community?” while the Activities Panel answers “which part of this community?” Together they let you switch spaces without rebuilding your whole working context.
Leave A Space
A joined member who is not the owner can use Leave from the space's rail menu. Wider layouts can also provide the join or leave control beside the space identity. Leaving removes the space from your personal rail and updates its displayed membership state and member count.
The owner of a published space cannot use the ordinary leave action. Ownership must first move to another active member through an explicit handoff. After the transfer, the former owner remains a member and can choose to leave normally. See Transfer Space Ownership before beginning that change.
Membership Management
Most members only need to join, respond to invitations, arrange their rail, and leave when a space is no longer relevant. People with verified space-management access have a separate set of member and invitation tools.
Use Members and Invites to understand that management surface, or follow Invite and Manage Members for the connected administration workflow. These controls manage the community's membership; they do not replace private-area access or role assignment.
Common Questions
Do I need to sign in before joining a space?
Yes. Joined membership, invitations, and personal rail order belong to a signed-in account.
Does joining a public space give me access to every private area inside it?
No. Private subspaces and activities have their own access boundary. Ordinary membership in the parent space does not reveal or unlock them.
Does joining make me a moderator or Space Admin?
No. Roles and permissions are assigned separately. A member receives only the actions available to their current access and permissions.
Why can I not leave a space I own?
A published space must keep an owner. Transfer ownership to another active member first, then leave as a regular member if you still want to go.
Does rearranging joined spaces affect other members?
No. Joined-space order is personal and is saved for your account. Shared subspace and activity ordering is a separate management concern.
Will a joined space always reopen the exact page I last viewed?
Not necessarily. The rail aims for a useful recent area and a stable app context. Missing, unsuitable, or outdated destinations fall back to a safe space entry point.
What do the update and meeting indicators grant me?
Nothing by themselves. They are navigation cues about activity or an ongoing meeting; your membership, private access, and permissions still determine what you can open or do.
