Custom emoji give a space its own visual shorthand for live conversation. Members can use the active catalog in Chat and Meetings, while the space owner and members with Manage Chat access maintain what appears there.
This is a shared space resource, not a personal emoji collection. A space can have up to 50 active custom emoji, and each name must be unique within that space.
Where Custom Emoji Belong
Custom emoji are designed for the quick, expressive moments that happen in live conversation. They can appear in Chat messages and reactions or as reactions during Meetings, helping a community recognize its own projects, language, and shared moments at a glance.
Their scope is deliberately narrow. Custom emoji do not become available in posts, articles, goals, or documents. Those longer-lived surfaces stay clear and understandable without depending on a space-specific image catalog.
Members who can open the Chat or Meeting emoji picker can use available custom emoji. Using the catalog does not grant permission to change it. Catalog management remains limited to the space owner and members with Manage Chat access.

When all 50 slots are in use, Upload Emoji is unavailable until an existing emoji is removed.

Images And Names
Upload Emoji opens the Add Emoji window. The same window can also open from the add control in the Chat emoji picker, so an eligible manager can add an emoji without leaving the conversation.
The image editor accepts jpg, jpeg, png, and webp files. It provides a square crop area where you can drag the image to reposition it, adjust the zoom, and check a live preview. Change image replaces the source without making you restart the rest of the entry.
The name becomes the emoji's readable Chat token. Visual Space normalizes entered names to lowercase, replaces unsupported character groups with underscores, and removes leading or trailing underscores. The final name must:
A clear name makes the emoji easier to search for and keeps the token useful when the image cannot be shown. For example, super_nova becomes :super_nova: in Chat.
Catalog Changes In Conversation
After an emoji is added, it joins the space catalog available to Chat and Meetings. An emoji picker that is already open refreshes when the catalog gains or loses an entry, so members can work from the current set without reopening it.
Deleting an emoji removes it immediately from the active catalog and frees one of the space's 50 slots. It no longer appears as a choice for new messages or reactions. If an older Chat message contains a shortcode that no longer matches an available custom emoji, the token remains readable as text rather than becoming an empty or broken image.

Why did the name I entered change?
Names are normalized into Chat-friendly shortcodes. They become lowercase, unsupported characters become underscores, and outer underscores are removed before the 2–32 character rule is checked.
What happens to older messages after an emoji is deleted?
The emoji disappears from the active picker. A shortcode that can no longer be resolved stays visible as text, such as :super_nova:, so the message remains readable.
Can custom emoji be used outside Chat and Meetings?
No. They are intentionally excluded from posts, articles, goals, and documents.
