Isolate part of a layer with a mask, then try a color treatment that you can revisit. This approach keeps the source artwork available while you refine the result. Open an editable document with a raster artwork layer. If you only have a local imported image, save a layered project before leaving the session.

Isolate part of a layer with a mask, then try a color treatment that you can revisit. This approach keeps the source artwork available while you refine the result.

Open an editable document with a raster artwork layer. If you only have a local imported image, save a layered project before leaving the session.

Keep The Subject Visible

•
Select the artwork layer - Confirm that it is visible and unlocked, and select its content thumbnail.
•
Select the area to keep - Use a supported selection around the subject. A rectangular selection is a simple first example.
•
Create the mask - Choose More > Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal Mask from Selection. Inspect which parts of the artwork remain visible.
•
Refine the mask - Select the mask thumbnail before brushing or erasing its coverage. Switch back to the content thumbnail only when you intend to edit the artwork itself.

Disable the mask temporarily to compare against the full source. If you delete the mask, the artwork layer remains.

Try A Color Treatment

•
Add an adjustment layer - Use More > Layer > New > Adjustment Layer and choose Hue/Saturation, Color Balance, or another suitable adjustment.
•
Inspect the affected artwork - The adjustment acts on artwork beneath it. Check its place in the stack before making a large change.
•
Compare the result - Change the settings, then toggle the adjustment's preview or visibility. Use intensity to reduce a treatment that is too strong.

The subject mask and the color adjustment serve different purposes. One controls visibility; the other changes appearance. Keeping them editable makes the next revision easier.

Save The Editable Version

Choose More > Save for a shared document and check the result. Download a .vspixels layered project if you need a separate editable copy, then export a finished image as needed.

If the adjustment affects more of the composition than intended, review its stack position and mask. See Layers And Masks and Color And Adjustments.
