Visual Space manual, Goals, Board And Workflow

The Goals board keeps a community's active work visible without turning participation into a heavy project-management process. It gives members one place to see what is waiting, what is underway, and what has been finished, while leaving future work in the [backlog](backlog.md).

The Goals board shows where current work stands. Columns provide the workflow; cards provide a short view of each goal. Open a card for its article, or move later work to the backlog when it should leave the active plan.

Names That Fit Your Workflow

Boards begin with To Do, In Progress, and Done. Space owners and goal managers can rename those columns and add others, such as Selected or Review.

Every column also has a category:

•
To Do means the work has not started.
•
In Progress means the work is active.
•
Done marks completed work and enables the completed-history actions.

The name and category are separate. A column named Review might remain in the In Progress category because the result still needs checking. Renaming a column does not change its category.

The board groups current work by status while keeping its activity and assignee visible.

Empty columns stay visible, preserving the shape of the workflow. Each column shows its count, while the initial column has a starting-point marker. The overall header total describes the space's goals; it is not a count of only the cards matching your current activity or filters.

Read A Goal Without Losing Your Place

Cards show their title and reference along with available activity, responsibility, tag, and participation details. Selecting one opens the goal article beside the board and preserves your position, search, and filters.

Open a goal to read its context and review its status without losing the board.

Use the article to understand the outcome and discussion before changing a goal's status. A short card title is useful for scanning, but rarely contains the whole decision.

Choose Where New Goals Begin

Managers choose one initial column. The header's New action begins there; creating directly inside another column uses that selected column instead. New backlog goals also begin with the initial column as their prepared status.

Reordering columns does not change the initial destination. Use Make initial column from the intended column's menu when the starting point should change.

Move Work Through The Board

The reporter, an assignee, a space owner, or a goal manager can move a goal they can edit. They can drag it within a column, into another column, or between the board and backlog.

•
On desktop, drag a card to the desired position and release at the visible insertion point.
•
On touch layouts, long-press the card or backlog row to begin dragging, then move it to the destination.
•
Use Change Status in the goal menu, or Status in its article, when an exact position is unnecessary.

A cancelled drag or a failed save restores the earlier position. Check that the card settles in its intended destination before continuing with another move.

Assignee and color filters keep ordering and inline creation available. The saved order accounts for goals hidden by those filters. Text search disables dragging and inline insertion, because search results are not the board's saved sequence. Clear the search term to arrange work again; you do not have to remove assignee or tag filters.

Manage The Shared Workflow

Column controls belong to space owners and goal managers. They can create or rename a column, change its category, set the initial column, reorder headers on desktop, or delete a column. Names must be unique and no longer than 80 characters; a board supports up to 20 active columns.

Deleting a column keeps its goals. They move to the next column in the configured order, or the previous column when the deleted one was last. If it was initial, its replacement becomes the starting point. At least one column must remain.

A Done-category column also offers Clear Done. This removes its completed goals from the current board area into history without deleting their articles. Search and filters do not narrow the clearing action, so review the whole column first. See Completed Goals.

Smaller Screens

Desktop columns sit side by side, with their headers and lanes scrolling together horizontally. A wide-board preview helps you reach columns outside the visible portion.

On narrow screens, columns stack in workflow order above the backlog. Use normal vertical scrolling to browse, long-press to move an editable goal, or choose its status from the menu. Column reordering remains a desktop operation.

Common Questions

Does renaming Done change what counts as completed?

No. Completion follows the category. A column named Shipped can be Done; a column named Done should also have that category if it represents completion.

Why can I change status but not drag?

Clear any text search first. Dragging also requires editing access to the goal. Assignee and tag filters alone do not prevent it.

Will deleting a column delete its goals?

No. They move to the neighboring fallback column. Review their resulting status afterward.

Can assignment let someone redesign the workflow?

No. It gives access to the assigned goal. Column management requires space-owner or goal-management access.
