This walkthrough turns an empty or growing Space into a clear working structure. You will create a Subspace, add a focused Activity inside it, publish both with the right access, and verify how they appear to members.
Plan The Two Levels
You need to be the Space owner or have the relevant permission to manage Subspaces and Activities. Creating one level does not automatically grant management access to the other.
Choose a Subspace that can hold a meaningful family of work, then choose an Activity with a narrower collaboration purpose. For example:
Avoid making the Activity as broad as the Space or making the Subspace so narrow that it can hold only one short conversation. Space Areas explains the level-selection model in more depth.
Use the existing public branch to confirm the containment pattern before creating any new Subspace or Activity.
Create The Subspace
The draft stays visible to its creator and hidden from other users. Meaningful changes save and can be reopened from the draft group. Closing a completely untouched draft removes it.
If the Subspace is private, select Next, choose existing Space members, and publish after reviewing the list. The Space owner remains able to enter private child areas as a recovery boundary.
If it is public, select Create Subspace when the required content is ready.
Verify The New Group
The new Subspace begins without generated Activities. This keeps the hierarchy deliberate and prevents empty channels from appearing automatically.
Create An Activity Inside It
Activities cannot be created directly under a Space. If no suitable parent exists, create the Subspace first rather than trying to flatten the hierarchy.
Confirm The Working Context
Creating the area does not automatically publish a feed announcement. Add a post later when there is useful context or an invitation to contribute.
Refine The Structure
The first arrangement does not have to be permanent. Managers can reorder Subspaces, reorder or move Activities, and archive work that is no longer active. Titles and linked descriptions can also evolve while the published hierarchy remains recognizable.
Do not use privacy as an afterthought: public/private switching is unavailable after publication. When the audience is uncertain, resolve that decision before creating the published area.
Continue with Organize Subspaces and Activities for ordering, movement, and archiving.
Common Problems
Create Activity is missing. Confirm that the parent Subspace is published and that you have Activity-management access.
A draft vanished after I closed it. An untouched draft is removed automatically. Add meaningful identity or content if you need to keep and reopen the draft.
A member cannot find a private area. Check the private member list at the exact protecting level. Access to the Space does not automatically include an independently private Subspace or Activity.
A private member can enter but cannot create content. Entry and permissions are separate. Assign a suitable Role or adjust the applicable member baseline when the person needs more than read access.
I created the wrong privacy type. Published privacy cannot be switched. If the mistake is caught while still drafting, correct it before publication; otherwise decide whether a correctly configured replacement area is necessary.
Result
The Space now has a readable Subspace group and a focused Activity with linked onboarding content, a verified privacy boundary, and a clear place for connected collaboration.
