Visual Space manual, Spaces, Transfer Space Ownership

This walkthrough hands a Space to another joined member and verifies the authority change. Use it when responsibility for the whole community is genuinely moving, not as a temporary substitute for a powerful Role.

This walkthrough hands a Space to another joined member and verifies the authority change. Use it when responsibility for the whole community is genuinely moving, not as a temporary substitute for a powerful Role.

Understand The Consequence

Only the current owner can transfer ownership. The recipient must already be an active Space member, and a Space has only one owner at a time.

The transfer is one-way from your point of view. You cannot take ownership back yourself after confirming. The new owner must choose to transfer it back.

Ownership changes authority over the Space. It does not rewrite the authors of existing articles, posts, Goals, or other content. It also does not automatically remove your ordinary membership or separately assigned Roles.

If the person only needs to manage a feature or one area, create a suitable Role instead. See Roles and Permissions before using the stronger ownership boundary.

Prepare The New Owner

Confirm membership - Open Space Settings, then Members, and make sure the intended person is already listed as a joined member.
Confirm the person - Check their name, profile identity, and current involvement. Do not transfer to a similarly named account without verifying the profile.
Review operational access - Make sure the recipient can enter any private child areas they will need to manage and understands the Space's Roles, rules, members, storage, and active work.
Agree on timing - Complete the handoff while both people can verify the result. The former owner loses owner-only controls immediately.

For a private root Space, the recipient's accepted invitation already establishes the root access and joined navigation needed for transfer.

Before opening transfer controls, verify the current owner indicator and that the intended person is already a joined member.

Transfer From The Members Page

Open the member menu - On the intended recipient's row in Members, open the available actions.
Choose Transfer Ownership - Review the preview carefully. The modal names both the recipient and the Space that will change hands.
Type the member name - Enter the recipient's name exactly in the confirmation field. A mismatch blocks the transfer.
Enable Confirm ownership transfer - Read the irreversible-action warning that appears before continuing.
Select Confirm Transfer - Wait while the request is in progress. Do not close the page or repeat the action while it shows Transferring.
Acknowledge the result - A successful modal changes to Transfer made and states that the selected member is now the owner. Select Confirm to return to the Space.

If the request fails, ownership remains with the current owner. Resolve the error and recheck the target before trying again.

Verify Both Sides

Check the Space header or member list - The new owner should now carry the owner identity.
Refresh owner-sensitive controls - The former owner should no longer see owner-only actions unless a separate Role grants an equivalent delegated capability.
Ask the new owner to open Space Settings - They should be able to reach ownership-protected management and recovery actions.
Check continued membership - The former owner normally remains a joined member and keeps any Roles that were assigned independently.
Check content authorship - Existing articles and other work should still show their original authors; ownership transfer does not claim that history for the new owner.

The former owner can now leave as a non-owner if they no longer want to remain in the Space, though a clean handoff period is usually helpful.

If Transfer Ownership Is Missing

You are not the current owner. Powerful Roles do not grant the ownership-transfer action. Ask the owner to perform the handoff.

The target is not a joined member. Invite them and wait for acceptance before trying again. See Invite and Manage Members.

You opened your own row or the current owner's row. Choose a different active member. The action is offered only for an eligible non-owner target.

The typed name does not match. Use the exact member name shown in the preview, including spacing.

Recover From A Mistaken Decision

There is no self-service undo for the previous owner. Contact the new owner, explain the mistake, and ask them to repeat the transfer back to you from their Members page.

If the intended need was delegated administration rather than a permanent handoff, the new owner can create a Role with the narrow capabilities required and then transfer ownership back. Role scope is safer than repeatedly moving the recovery boundary.

Result

The selected joined member is now the sole Space owner. Existing content keeps its authorship, the former owner remains a member unless they leave, and every owner-sensitive decision now belongs to the new owner.
